English Language Teaching (ELT) Pedagogy Department


Introduction

Language learning can be both effective and fun. The art of teaching, however, is to know how to accomplish this in your classroom. The ELT Pedagogy Department designs and conducts ELT courses/ programmes for secondary school teachers based on sound educational theories, research-driven TESL methodology and effective classroom practice. These courses/programmes are aimed at introducing and exemplifying creative and innovative teaching techniques for the English language classroom.

 

Mission

To promote innovative methods and approaches in the teaching of English to enhance the quality of English language teaching at the secondary school level.

Objectives

  • To plan and conduct ELT courses based on current educational theories and classroom practices for secondary school EL teachers
  • To design and develop courses in TESL methodology for secondary school teachers based on research
  • To develop research-based secondary school EL classroom materials as well as teacher resource materials
  • To design and develop programmes to support the continuous professional development of secondary school English language teachers
  • To offer consultancy services on EL teaching and learning at secondary school level


  1. NORIZAH BINTI ABDUL BARI

    Profile
    I began my teaching career as a primary school teacher in December 1990 in Segamat and later in Muar, Johor. Upon obtaining my degree in 2000, I was posted to Muar High School in January 2002 where I served till February 2014. I left for my sabbatical leave to pursue my Masters and was then redeployed to ELTC in February 2016. I attribute my interests in English pedagogy and second language acquisition to my experiences in teaching in various schools, from the low achieving schools to the premier.

  2. Nurhani Binti Omar

    Profile
    Currently I am a lecturer in the ELT Pedagogy Department. My teaching career started in 1999 as a secondary school teacher in Sarawak and later in Selangor. My interests include multiple intelligences and second language acquisition.

  3. Diana Fatimah Ahmad Sahani

    Profile
    I entered the education arena in June 1991, and have not looked back since. I was appointed as the District English Support Teacher (DEST) for Johor Bahru in 2002. In September 2004, I joined the Curriculum Development Division and was appointed as the Unit Head of English and Literature (Secondary) in 2010. I left for school to later become the Senior Teacher of Languages at SMK Putrajaya Presint 9(2), where besides English, I managed Bahasa Melayu, Arabic and Japanese. Today, I am honoured and extremely proud to be in ELTC.

  4. Darshini Nadarajan

    Profile
    My first foray into teaching began in 2008 when I was posted in a rural school. Since then, I have taught English and Literature in English while juggling various posts such as Master Trainer and Debate coach for the state of Pahang, as well as a module writer for the Curriculum Development Division. Armed with a Fulbright scholarship in 2013, I majored in American Literature and Creative Writing in Michigan State University. My interests lie in the discursive politics of language and identity within the intersection of gender and ableism.

    I gained experience as a classroom teacher prior to becoming an academic lecturer. I have written workbooks and published papers in journals. At present, I conduct courses and write modules .
